Upgrades

Armor IThe Gate has the ability to increase its health supply by 50%. In doing so, the damage previously sustained is repaired.
Armor IIThe Gate has the ability to increase its health supply by 100%. In doing so, the damage previously sustained is repaired.

What is the Gate?

Gates turn map geometry into part of the defense. They deal no damage, but close a convenient route, force a ground army to stop, and give defenders time to take a favorable position. Properly placed Gates reshape the battle itself: the opponent must assault a prepared approach instead of bypassing the army and suddenly reaching the economy.

Strengths

  • 800 health for 5 ore — no other building gives you this much durability at that price.
  • A single Gate blocks a passage completely: it spans a strip of 8 tiles, so you do not need a second building on the same approach.
  • It requires no other buildings — you can start a Gate in the very first minute of the battle.
  • Armor I and Armor II cheaply raise durability to 1200 and 1600 health, and completing an upgrade fully restores the building.

Weaknesses

  • It does not attack: the Gate is only a barrier, and without an army nearby it merely buys time.
  • It can be built only at designated spots on the map — in front of slopes and at bridge connections. A Gate cannot be placed in the middle of an open field.
  • It does not stop aircraft: the Thunder, Hawk, and Balloon fly over a closed Gate. A Turret and units that attack air targets shut down the aerial detour.
  • An open Gate lets everyone through, including the enemy army, so the doors must be controlled manually.
  • Tanks with their double damage to buildings destroy even an upgraded Gate very quickly.

Passage control

The best Gate locations are slopes and bridge connections where the enemy cannot simply drive around the obstacle. A closed passage protects the harvesting line and reveals the direction of an attack in advance. To let your army through, open the Gate manually and close it again right behind it.

Gates and the army

The Gate delays Lynxes and gives the Devastator time to fire from a safe distance. A slow Titan can finish production and join the defense. A Worker can repair the Gate during battle, while an Armor upgrade started in advance fully restores its health when completed.

Opening and closing the Gate

The Gate is the only building you control during battle. A closed Gate occupies terrain tiles and lets no ground unit through. An open one clears the passage, but for everyone at once: both your army and the enemy army will pass through an open Gate.

The toggle is a button on the Gate itself. The doors take about a second to open or close, and the Gate cannot be toggled again while the animation plays — if the enemy is near, do not put off closing it.

Gate upgrades

Armor ICosts 6 ore and takes 15 seconds to research. Increases Gate health by 50%, from 800 to 1200, and fully restores it when complete.
Armor IICosts 12 ore and takes 15 seconds to research. Adds another 400 health, bringing the total increase to 100% of the base value, from 1200 to 1600. Gate health is also fully restored when complete.

The levels are researched in order right in the Gate: first Armor I, then Armor II. No Laboratory or other buildings are needed for these upgrades.

How do you get past an enemy Gate?

An enemy Gate in your path is no reason to turn around. There are several working options:

Build order

One build order for defending against an early Lynx breakthrough:

  1. After producing the fifth Worker, start building a Gate but do not complete it yet.
  2. As soon as you have 10 ore, build a Reactor.
  3. Send the Worker who completed the Reactor to finish the Gate.
  4. Use another harvesting Worker to build a Barracks and continue producing new Workers.
  5. After the Gate is complete, send the free Worker to build a Factory, then continue with the chosen plan.

This build slightly delays standard development but strengthens defense against an early ground attack.

Gate FAQ

Where can you build a Gate?

Only at designated spots on the map — in front of slopes and at bridge connections. A Gate cannot be placed in the middle of a flat field. A single Gate covers a strip of 8 tiles and blocks a passage completely.

Does the Gate stop aircraft?

No. A closed Gate blocks only ground units — the Thunder, Hawk, and Balloon fly over it. Against air attacks you need a Turret and anti-air units.
